  • 🛡️ Always back up your site before installing new plugins.

🧩 Troubleshooting Plugin/Theme Installation

If you encounter issues while installing a plugin or theme, check the tips below:

1. 📦 Double-Compressed Files (Nested ZIP Issue)

Problem: Some themes/plugins (especially from Themeforest or Codecanyon) come in a ZIP inside another ZIP.

Solution:

  • Extract the main ZIP file first.
  • Find the actual installable ZIP inside (e.g., plugin-name.zip).
  • Upload only the inner ZIP to WordPress.

❌ Wrong: Uploading the outer ZIP → causes “stylesheet missing” or “invalid package” errors.

2. 🔄 Uploading in the Wrong Section

  • Plugins: Install via Plugins > Add New > Upload.
  • Themes: Install via Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload.

❌ Mistake: Uploading a plugin as a theme (or vice versa) → results in errors.

3. ⚙️ Server Requirements Not Met

Before installing, make sure your hosting meets these minimum specs:

  • PHP: 7.0+ (Recommended: 8.0+)
  • MySQL: 5.6+ or MariaDB 10.0+
  • RAM: At least 128MB (256MB+ preferred)
  • Web Server: Apache/Nginx with mod_rewrite enabled

If your PHP is outdated, contact your hosting provider. 📞

4. ⏳ PHP Settings Too Low (Timeout or Upload Fails)

If your plugin or theme is large, update your php.ini (or ask hosting support):

max_execution_time = 600
max_input_vars = 5000
memory_limit = 256M
post_max_size = 128M
upload_max_filesize = 128M

💬 You can also ask your hosting provider to help adjust this.

5. 🚀 Large Themes (>200MB) Need FTP Upload

Problem: WordPress may fail to upload very large themes via the dashboard.

Solution: Use FTP (FileZilla, WinSCP) or cPanel File Manager:

  • Extract the theme ZIP (if double-compressed).
  • Upload the theme folder to /wp-content/themes/.
  • Go to WordPress > Appearance > Themes and activate it.
